From India, claw bells like this were put around the necks of elephants to warn people of their impending approach. Apparently, for such a large animal, an elephant can move quietly. Today, the claw bell in India is more a recognition of the elephant's slavery, having been used in hauling, transportation, building, etc. This claw bell is brass with etched designs and dark red band of color. As a bell, it works very well. Condition is very good to excellent vintage. Stands about 2 inches high and has a weight of two ounces.
