A rare collection of Uncle Remus characters by Lowell Davis. Made by Schmid in Scotland. The Brer Rabbit stories, taken from African-American folklore, were collected by Joel Chandler Harris, a journalist and folklorist, who was born in Georgia in 1848 and died in Georgia in 1908. Harris created the character of Uncle Remus, an older black man who was a teller of stories. Brer Rabbit and the other critters, such as Brer Fox, Brer Bear, Brer Wolf, Brer Coyote and Brer Weasel populated these stories aimed at children. Walt Disney's 1946 film, Song of the South, was based directly on characters taken from Uncle Remus and the Brer stories. In this collection, which is in excellent, near mint condition, all of the critters in the Brer stories are represented. These figurines vary in height and width, depending on the character. A sign reading "Schmid Uncle Remus characters by Lowell Davis" is included. Total weight is 3 pounds, 4 ounces.
Lowell Davis, noted Missouri painter and sculptor, is known for his depictions of rural life. His work is collectible.
