Albert Frederick Schoenhut was a German immigrant who made wooden toy pianos in Philadelphia. Schoenhut branched out to dolls and other toys. Here is a musical roly-poly clown, still bright and colorful and standing 16 inches high and is about 8 inches at its widest point. This is an antique toy, papier mache, makes a musical sound when moved. Considering its age, materials used and the fact that it was made to entertain small children, makes it a rare piece. Small scratches and paint loss throughout, which is to be expected. Although he looks a little demonic, possessed and creepy by today's standards, likely the fear of clowns was not as prevalent in children a hundred years ago. Interesting note, the hair on the back of the clown's head is a fabric, almost like a rug or thick towel. For the collector of antique German-American toys or people who aren't afraid of clowns. Weighs 2 pounds, 6 ounces.
